Dutasteride: examining its effectiveness for treating BPH and hair loss

alopecia, dutasteride, man

Dutasteride is a drug with action as an inhibitor of 5α-reductase, an enzyme found in humans that converts testosterone, the male sex hormone, into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

This is a crucial drug in the field of andrology, which is part of the wide range of products for which we manage all phases of distribution: from scouting to importation, leveraging our expertise also in the phases of analysis, auditing, regulatory support, CRO, logistics and custom synthesis.

Dutasteride: what is it for?

As mentioned earlier, Dutasteride’s active ingredient works by targeting 5α-reductase, which regulates dihydrotestosterone, one of the most powerful male sex hormones. While this hormone is crucial for male health, any imbalances can lead to the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can obstruct the urethra and cause difficulties during urination.

Drugs containing Dutasteride can be prescribed to reduce the volume of the prostate gland by blocking male hormones, which helps counteract the main symptoms of the disorder and provides relief to the patient. This medication is also helpful in delaying the need for surgery or other invasive treatments.

It’s important to note that the prostate gland naturally increases in size with age. However, when this process causes obstruction of the urethra, it can increase the risk of urinary tract infections and kidney damage.

Dutasteride is also important in treating androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness. Although it’s not officially recognized, physicians may prescribe Dutasteride off-label (non-official uses of the drug under a doctor’s professional advice) as a treatment for this hereditary condition that affects more than 70% of men over the age of 80. By acting on DHT production, Dutasteride can counteract or delay hair loss.

Dutasteride: how long to take it for?

The effect of Dutasteride is not immediate but follows a long process; in fact, therapy with this drug can last more than 3 months before the first signs of improvement appear.

When the increase in prostate gland volume is significant and drug therapy is ineffective, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical procedure that, although subject to possible complications, remains an effective method to reduce symptoms as much as possible can be used.

Dutasteride: side effects

Due to its action on androgenic hormones, specifically the production of dihydrotestosterone, Dutasteride may have potential side effects.

Scientific studies have found a link between Dutasteride and sexual dysfunctions such as erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, and decreased sexual desire. These effects are usually experienced at the beginning of the treatment and tend to diminish as the therapy progresses.

Moreover, the scientific literature indicates that individuals on Dutasteride therapy for BPH have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to those treated with other drugs.

Finally, an issue associated with Dutasteride is the so-called Post-Finasteride Syndrome, derived from the name of another 5α-reductase inhibitor drug, Finasteride. After completing therapy, some patients may experience sexual, physical, and neurological side effects. If any negative symptoms arise, the patient should contact their physician. The doctor may recommend discontinuing the medication and suggest alternative treatment options.
